East Sacramento fifth grader among student ambassadors to Canada

SACRAMENTO, CA  -- Samantha Warren of East Sacramento, a fifth grader at Courtyard School, will join a student delegation that heads to Canada in July as part of an educational and cultural exchange. 

 

Samantha is among a group of 40 Northern California students selected by People to People International, a student ambassador program founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to promote international understanding and cooperation.

SACRAMENTO, CA - Rain slowed down the afternoon commute across Northern California Thursday.

"I have my golf umbrella, so I'm doing ok and dry for now, " David Low said.

Capitol Ace Hardware in downtown Sacramento is ready to help people get prepared for the stormy weather.

"We've got tarps, pipe insulation and even snow shovels if it comes to that," hardware store employee Matt London said.

The cold blast of artic air and rain was a brisk reminder of what could come Friday night, possible valley snow.

"I'm ready, it hasn't snowed in Sacramento since 1976," Low said.

Sacramento area high school speech students to compete to qualify for state championships

Hundreds of Sacramento area high school students from 23 local schools will take part in the Capitol Valley Forensic League’s annual tournament to vie for a chance to compete at the State Championships, which will take place April 15 to 17 at San Diego State University.

Students will compete in 12 events, broken down into three categories: Original, Interpretive and Spontaneous events.

“Prepare to be awed and inspired by some of the brightest and outstanding students in the region,” said June Read, President of the Capitol Valley Forensic League. “These students have been preparing all year for this event. They will make you laugh, think, cry and give you confidence in our state’s future.”

It's a culinary event that introduces classical music to a younger generation. Sacramento Philharmonic's TEMPO group is hosting a mixer called  "Beer, Brats & Beethoven" which enables classical music lovers to enjoy a cold brewskie while enjoying  the music of Beethoven and is a prelude to the Sacramento Philharmonic concert highlighting the work of the famous composer. 

TEMPO member Caleb Mittelstet and Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra Executive Director Marc Feldman share all the details.

D-I Girls Section playoffs: (1) St. Francis, (16) Bear Creek

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Saint Francis Troubadours defeated the Bear Creek Bruins 68-29 to open the first tound of the D-I Sac-Joaquin Section Playoffs.

The Troubadours (22-6) are looking to return to the section finals after losing to Vallejo in the D-II Title game last season. St. Francis will host McNair on Thursday.

Sacramento woman enters guilty plea to mail theft

SACRAMENTO, CA - A 28-year-old Sacramento woman pleaded guilty to mail theft and bank fraud in federal court Tuesday, says the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of California.

According to a plea agreement made with prosecutors, Laura L. Gregory admitted to acting in concert with others to stake out U.S. Postal Service mailboxes to steal customers' mail. When federal agents searched Gregory's home on June 29, 2010, they recorded recovering more than 500 pieces of mail addressed to more than 350 different people.

Gregory was also accused of using information gleaned from the stolen mail to fraudulently obtain credit cards and use them to buy goods and service.

St. Francis, St. Mary's grab top seeds in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Girls basketball playoff brackets

SACRAMENTO -- St. Francis, St. Mary's, Sacramento High and Modesto Christian will be the top seeds in the upcoming girls high school basketball playoffs.  The Sac-Joaquin Section girls basketball playoff brackets were released Sunday by the CIF and get underway Tuesday.

The first two rounds of the Section playoff schedule will be held on Tuesday and Thursday at the higher seeding's home site. 

The semifinals in D-I and D-II will be held at Univerity of Pacific on Wednesday, March 2.  The semifinals for D-III will take place on March 2 at Cosumnes River College in south Sacramento.

The D-IV semifinals will also take place on March 2 at Lodi's Tokay High School, and the D-V semifinals will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at Galt High School.

All of the Sac-Joaquin Section Finals will take place from Sacramento's Power Balance Pavilion, formerly ARCO Arena, on March 4 and 5.

Sheldon & Sacramento headline CIF Sac-Joaquin Section boys basketball playoffs

SACRAMENTO, CA - Sheldon, Woodcreek, and Sacramento High Schools headline the boys number one seeds in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Sac-Joaquin Division Playoffs, which are set to begin Wednesday.

The first two rounds will take place at the home sites of the top seeded teams on Wednesday and Friday. 

The Division I and Division II semifinals will take place at Power Balance Pavilion, formerly ARCO Arena on March 1. 

The Division III semifinals will take place at Cosumnes River College in South Sacramento, while the semifinals for Division IV will be held at Tokay High School in Lodi on March 2.  The semifinals for Division V will take place at Galt High School on March 1.

All CIF Sac-Joaquin Division Finals will be held on March 4 and 5 at Power Balance Pavilion in Sacramento.
