“12 Days of Midtown” in December highlights festive & fun ways to celebrate the season

Committed to fostering a center for culture, creativity and vibrancy in Sacramento’s urban core, the Midtown Association is pleased to present another season of “12 Days of Midtown” where local businesses and organizations offer celebratory events, activities and specials to encourage visitors to spend time in Midtown this season.

“Amid a thriving urban environment, the holidays offer a perfect opportunity to explore, discover and/or revisit Midtown,” said Emily Baime Michaels, Executive Director of the Midtown Association. “With so many locally owned businesses and eateries, guests to Midtown can take great pride in supporting the community while engaging in festive activities while finding unique gift items along the way.”

Throughout the first 12 days of December, Midtown guests can experience something extra special each day, a sampling of which includes the following:

As a special highlight to complement the dynamic new TAKE FLIGHT exhibit currently on display at the Aerospace Museum of California, the crowd-favorite Paper Airplane Guru Kevin Saunders will be a special guest on Black Friday (November 24, 2017) for a one-day-only Paper Airplane Day!

It’s All Aboard for Story Time! with Mrs.Claus as a celebrity guest reader on Monday, December 4, 2017, at 11 a.m. at the California State Railroad Museum. To the delight of young children and train enthusiasts alike, Mrs. Claus will read the children’s books The Night Before Christmas and Thomas and the Christmas Tree (both are Thomas and Friends books).

Holiday magic continues in Old Sacramento with the 9th annual “Macy’s Theatre of Lights”

An electrifying and family-friendly holiday tradition, the ever-popular “Macy’s Theatre of Lights” performances will return to dazzle the Old Sacramento historic district again this season. Taking place on K Street between Front and 2nd Streets, the performances kick off on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, following a festive and fun tree lighting ceremony that is complete with pre- and post-show entertainment. The free performances will continue for a total of 22 magical evenings ending on Christmas Eve.

What’ll it Be? Beer or wine?

Cheers to UC Davis and our new beer! Yes, indeed, as a world leader in brewing science and education, we are rolling out a UC Davis-branded beer. It’s a light-bodied lager called Gunrock, and it’ll be for sale at The Pavilion at the ARC when the men’s basketball team opens its home season, Wednesday, Nov. 29.

Continuing a series of fun and interactive “Hands on History” activities offered each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) and Friends of Sutter’s Fort are proud to present a special “Hands on History: The Donner Party and Westward Migration” event on Saturday, November 18, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fort visitors will be delighted to see the recently completed restoration of the historic walls, gates, blacksmith shop and current restoration of the interior walls plus have the opportunity to step back in time to learn more about the Donner Party and western migration in general.

 In partnership with the Museum Store Association (MSA), many Sacramento area museums are proud to participate in Museum Store Sunday on November 26, 2017. With more than 525 museum stores participating across eight countries and three continents, the international effort is designed to remind consumers about the unique and inspired shopping experience that exists in one-of-a-kind museum stores all of which showcase a broad assortment of highly curated and mission-specific gifts. Museum Store Sunday is managed by the Museum Store Association based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Museum Store Sunday is open to all independently operated museum stores and non-profit retailers located at museums, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, historic sites, and other unique cultural institutions in the United States and internationally.

Kaiser Permanente awards more than $1.5 million in grants to Sacramento-area nonprofit organizations

Dozens of Community Benefit grants support critical needs ranging from overcoming opioid addiction to providing mental health counseling for the homeless 

 

Kaiser Permanente has awarded 52 grants totaling more than $1.5 million to local not-for-profit organizations, schools and public entities in Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties.


The grants are part of Kaiser Permanente’s long-standing Community Benefit program. This year, the grants ranged in individual amounts from $10,000 to $99,900.

 

The grants aim to improve access to health care services, promote healthy eating and active living, support access to mental health services, and improve individual, family and community safety.
