Why pandas are black and white

The scientists who uncovered why zebras have black-and-white stripes (to repel biting flies), took the coloration question to giant pandas in a study published this week in the journal Behavioral Ecology.

The study, a collaboration between the University of California, Davis, and California State University, Long Beach, determined that the giant panda’s distinct black-and-white markings have two functions: camouflage and communication.

Truffle the Ice Cream Ambassador at the Sacramento Zoo

Meet Truffle the Turtle! She is the newest staff member at the Sacramento Zoo and she’s an official Ice Cream Ambassador. Truffle spends her time job-shadowing staff, finding out what your favorite ice cream flavor is and talking about the Ice Cream Safari fundraiser on August 20th.

After her Ice Cream Ambassador job is done at the Zoo, she’ll find a new home with a very lucky GiRaffle winner at Ice Cream Safari! Until then, follow along as she explores the Zoo!

Calling Kids & Canines… Midtown Business Association to Present Halloween Festival & Pooch Parade

Plans are afoot for the Midtown Business Association (MBA) to present the crowd-favorite Midtown Halloween Festival & Pooch Parade on Saturday, October 31, 2015 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Marshall Park (915 27th Street).  Sponsored by the Sutter District – with restaurants that include BarWest, Blue Cue, Café Bernardo, Centro Cocina Mexicana, Harlow’s, INK Eats & Drinks, Paragary’s Midtown & Red Rabbit Kitchen & Bar – and the Food Literacy Center, the canine-friendly event is highlighted by the much-anticipated “pooch parade” scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. that day. Four-legged friends will strut by while competing in an entertaining costume contest that will include playful prizes for the winning pooches.

Midtown Business Association’s Pop-Up Dog Park  To “Pop Up” Twice This Summer

Plans are afoot to have Midtown Sacramento’s popular Pop-Up Dog Park “pop up” twice this summer – on Saturday, June 20, on the grounds of Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park to showcase Sutter Medical Center’s “Pet Therapy Program” during their large-scale Community Day and then on Saturday, August 1, adjacent to the thriving Midtown Farmers Market on 20th Street between J & K.  Led by the Midtown Business Association and with the help of involved community partners -- such as local animal shelters, the Urban Land Institute (ULI), a local landscape architect and a number of willing volunteers -- the first “Pop-Up Dog Park” debuted in Midtown in April 2014 to the delight of countless canines and their companions.
