To honor their service and celebrate the patriotic holiday, California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are proud to offer veterans and active military personnel  complimentary excursion train rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad plus complimentary Museum admission on Monday, November 11, 2013.

2nd Annual “Souls of the City” Activities in Old Sacramento Culminate With Celebration on November 1

In honor of “Day of the Dead” activities celebrated each year in Mexico and in major cities around the world, Sol Collective and the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation have teamed up to present a series of 2nd Annual Dia De Los Muertos/“Souls of the City” events and activities in Old Sacramento that have been taking place throughout October and culminate on Friday, November 1, 2013, at 6 p.m. in front of the Sacramento History Museum.   The annual tradition -- a national holiday in Mexico – is showcased by friends and families building elaborate altars to honor loved ones who have died then gathering in remembrance and celebration.

Sacramento Museums Honor Veterans with Special Events & Activities in November

In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California’s fine art, history, science, and wildlife treasures all year long.  In November, many of the 30 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are offering special Veteran’s Day related events and activities, including:

Free Museum Admission for Veterans at Maidu Museum & Historic Site – November 6-15
From November 6 to 15, all veterans can enjoy free admission to the Maidu Museum & Historic Site. And, showing daily at 2 p.m. is a one-hour documentary featuring three Northern California Native American veterans that is titled “Original Patriots: Northern California Indian Veterans of WWII”.  For more, visit www.roseville.ca.us/indianmuseum

State Indian Museum Presents Basket Weaving Demonstrations this Saturday!

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the State Indian Museum is pleased to present a full day of special California Indian Basket Weaving Demonstrations on Saturday, November 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  

Guests will enjoy watching Native weavers as they demonstrate how to use a variety of materials and techniques, and also share stories in a day long showcase of basketry art.  This is a rare opportunity to observe and learn from the masters; special guest weavers include Dixie Rogers, Karuk; Diana Almandariz, Ardith Read and (new this year!) Susan Billie, Hopland Band of Pomo Indians; and Kathy Wallace – Yurok/Karuk Member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe.
