SACRAMENTO, CA - Arson investigators are looking into who set the wooden playground structure on fire at McKinley Park early Saturday.

Firefighters were called to McKinley Park, located at Alhambra Boulevard and McKinley Boulevard at 1:20 a.m. Saturday.

According to Sacramento City Fire Battalion Chief Jonathan Williams, the fire destroyed half of the playground. The swing set portion of the toddler play area wasn't damaged.

Sacramento City Fire Battalion Chief Niko King said when the first fire engines arrived at the park, flames were 50 to 60 feet in the air. It took them hours to put out the fire.

A witness reported someone leaving the area around the time the fire started; Williams said investigators are following up on that lead.

Investigators suspect a homeless person may have started the fire.

It is disappointing for the families that will be bringing their children out to the park to play and will find the playground destroyed, Williams said.

City councilmember Steve Cohn, who represents East Sacramento, vowed the playground will be rebuilt.
