Sharon Ito
Multimedia Journalism Summer Academy instructor

My husband, News10 multimedia journalist George Warren, and I taught a high school academy at Sacramento State this summer.

We had about 20 students in our Multimedia Journalism Academy. We packed a lot of stuff in just a week.

We toured the News10 studios and the Sacramento Bee.  We had classroom presentations from News10 director of photography John Larimore, News10 web and social media producer Maneeza Iqbal, Sacramento Bee photographer Randy Pench, and Sactown Magazine editor Stu VanAirsdale, who is also a journalism professor at Sac State.

George also showed the class how a smartphone can be a powerful storytelling tool. After getting hands-on training in shooting, writing and editing a video story, the students created a final video project. Most of them had never produced a video story before, but they caught on quickly and their imaginations soared.

By the way, my retirement lasted a mere 18 months.

After 30 years in the news business (20 at News10), it was hard slowing down, after all.  You'll now find me at Sac State's College of Continuing Education (CCE), which runs the Summer Academies for High School Students program. These days I write student success stories as CCE’s communications & public affairs manager.

It was nice visiting the newsroom and seeing old friends!
