In 2014, California State Parks, the California State Rairoad Museum and the Sacramento Southern Railroad are celebrating 31 years of weekend excursion train rides that are now available on weekends through September.  To learn more about the fascinating history, below are some interesting facts that will get you up-to-speed.

Railroad Museum & Raley’s to Showcase the Deep Roots of Railroads & Agriculture

All aboard from Farm-to-Fork!

Coinciding with the inaugural Farm-to-Fork Capital of America initiative, California State Parks, the California State Railroad Museum Foundation and Raley’s Family of Fine Stores will showcase the important role the region’s railroads have played in supporting agriculture.  On September 28 & 29 -- during the final weekend of regular season excursion train rides on the Sacramento Southern Railroad -- a shipment of locally-grown pears donated by Raley’s Family of Fine Stores will be stacked in crates on the Freight Depot platform in Old Sacramento State Historic Park and offered free to train riders all weekend long (while supplies last).

The recreated farm-fresh scene is reminiscent of the early 1900s when the Museum’s Sacramento Southern Railroad transported pears, asparagus and other products to market from Delta communities such as Isleton, Walnut Grove, Hood and Freeport.  Pears, in particular, were once cons

Railroad Museum Celebrates “Diesels & Dads”On Father’s Day Weekend

California State Parks and the California State Railroad Museum are gearing up to celebrate “Diesels and Dads” on Father’s Day weekend – June 15 & 16 -- by operating two visually-exciting and gracefully-styled diesel locomotives as part of the popular weekend excursion train rides on the Museum’s Sacramento Southern Railroad.  These brightly painted diesels -- Western Pacific No. 913 and Southern Pacific “Daylight” No. 6051 -- will pull the excursion trains both Saturday and Sunday on Father’s Day weekend.   These eye-catching and classic streamlined locomotives are representative of the so-called “First Generation” of diesel-electric locomotives which replaced steam engines all across American during the 1940s and 1950s.

R2-D2 at DMV?

R2-D2 at DMV?

Sacramento -- Self-Service Terminals (SSTs) at three local DMVs enable immediate registration renewals of most vehicles, providing a new registration card and license plate sticker. SSTs in DMVs at:

4700 Broadway, Sacramento; 7775 La Mancha Way, Sacramento and 5209 North Avenue, Carmichael.

Resembling an ATM, the SSTs are touch-screen operation that scans either your vehicle's Renewal Notice or current Registration Card. When the registration information is displayed, payment is made through the SST by inserting cash, check, credit or debit card. Immediately upon acceptance of payment, the SST prints a new registration card and license plate sticker. The process takes five minutes or less!

Visit www.dmv.ca.gov for updated information about SST locations and all DMV stuff you may need to know. SSTs also process PNOs for vehicles needing Planned Non-Operation status.

Railroad Museum Returns Heavy Duty 80-Foot Turntable to Service

Owned and operated by the California State Railroad Museum, the hard-working and heavy duty 80-foot turntable located at the west end of the Museum officially returns to full operation on Friday, April 12, after a major maintenance overhaul.   Fabricated by the American Bridge Company in 1911 -- the same company that built the “workhorse” I Street Bridge during the very same year -- and originally installed in Yakima, Washington, the turntable was acquired by California State Parks from Union Pacific Railroad and installed in Old Sacramento circa 1980.  The turntable is used to move heavy locomotives and equipment in and out of the Railroad Museum; all locomotives and rail cars going in or out of the nearby Central Pacific Railroad Passenger Station and its display tracks also must cross the turntable because of the constrained track layout in Old Sacramento.
